Consumer Law Introduction

The consumer law overview provides access to several areas of the law that affect you and your family. The subtopics below will help you better understand legal and financial implications, which affect decisions you make daily.

Consumer Protection Financial Bureau

The is a federal government agency.  The CFBP protects consumers from unfair, deceptive, or abusive practices and takes action against companies that break consumer law.  However, they have many additional roles.  This includes the following:

  • Write rules, supervise companies, and enforce the law in order to protect consumers from deceptive and abusive practices;

  • Enforce laws that outlaw discrimination in consumer finance;

  • Accept consumer complaints;

  • Enhance and empower consumers through financial education;

  • Research the consumer experience of using financial products; and

  • Monitor the financial markets for new risks to consumers.
